“I love what I do. I get to help my clients do really good things.” Claudia Sangster, Director of Philanthropy, Estate and Trust Services at Harris myCFO™, and co-founding Partner of LASVP, views the intersection between her work life and her volunteer life to be highly symbiotic. For more than a decade, Claudia has worked with Harris myCFO™ clients: “families who are looking for ways to engage with the nonprofit community and to bring the next generation into the process of giving as a family together and creating legacy.”
So what prompted this theatre-loving Southern Californian to extend what she does during the day into her volunteer service? “The SVP model is what drew me in. I thought it was the most effective way to get quick and deep experience. You can talk about grantmaking – you can write a lot of white papers and articles – but there’s no substitute for actually doing it.”
Since LASVP was founded in 2004, Claudia has sat on grant committees, worked on investee projects, and conducted philanthropy workshops for her own and other SVPs across the network. Currently she serves as the LASVP Board Chair and is working on a project for LASVP investee, Healthy Child Healthy World.
When she’s not immersed in philanthropy through her work at Harris myCFO™ and LASVP, Claudia’s interests are varied and far-flung, including college sports: water polo and men’s volleyball! She’s also planning to purchase her first motorcycle this year, something she’s always wanted to do. “It’s time to start checking off the bucket list, and that was on it.”
An avid reader, currently she’s recommending “Bounce: The Art of Turning Tough Times into Triumph” by her friend, Keith McFarland. “It’s a great story about what to do during a tough economic cycle for business and I think it applies equally well to the nonprofit sector. It’s kind of a parable. It’s very well done and a simple but profound read.”
Claudia’s life is full of rewarding opportunities and experiences: “What better job can you have than helping families work together and give together to help solve some of those difficult societal problems.”
